Materials Science and Engineering

Materials sector

In the university’s lectures and my senior thesis project, I learned the fundamentals of material microstructures, thermodynamics, and intelligent material design using plastic processing. These experiences have been beneficial in my current project “research and development of high-performance steel”.

Materials sector

I am a blast furnace technician, making steel. When I was a student, I conducted research on reactions inside blast furnaces. Thus I wanted to work in this industry. Today, I live a fulfilling life. I truly believe that if you have a dream and passion, you can do whatever it takes to achieve your goal. However, without a dream or passion, you can’t do anything. I hope that the Materials and Manufacturing Science program at Osaka University will expand your potential and help you fulfill your dream and passion.

Heavy industry sector

When I joined the company, I was assigned to a field that had little to do with my university research project. As I gain more experience in this new field, most of what I learned in materials science such as electrochemistry and crystal structure science is useful. I wish I had studied more, but what I learned at the university serves as the foundation for my current research. Thus, it was a great experience for me to learn foundational science of materials.

Electronics sector

Planning, sample preparation, evaluation, and discussion – these research activities, which involve actual materials, are really precious and unique to the Materials and Manufacturing Science program. I truly appreciate that these activities are the foundation for my job as an IC design engineer.

National research institute

The Materials and Manufacturing Science program has a lot of state-of-art research equipment, and many of our professors are on the front line of research. Such an environment allowed me to be part of cutting-edge research in materials science, even though I was just a student. Additionally, the program covers a broad range of subjects. The knowledge and experience I gained at the university have really helped my career.
Manufacturing Science

Materials sector

The knowledge I learned in the mechanics of materials, science of metal microstructure, and welding engineering serves as the foundation for what I do in my job. Especially, knowledge of steel material welding is unique to this program, and has contributed to my research and development projects.

Heavy industry sector

Welding is a technology indispensable in manufacturing, especially in heavy industries. I appreciate that I had the opportunity to learn it in an academic environment. It is very useful in my job at actual manufacturing sites. Not only the knowledge but also the scientific approach and skills I learned from various experiments and analyses at the university serve as the foundation for my job as an engineer.

Power and energy sector

The knowledge I learned in the university’s lectures of science of metal microstructure and mechanics of materials helps me evaluate plant aging and formulate effective maintenance strategies. Additionally, the scientific approach I learned from my mentors in my university research as well as presentation skills are the foundation for my current job.

Transport and service sector

As a university student, I had opportunities to be involved in various hardware and software research on next-generation manufacturing systems. Today, my job deals with road transport systems. Manufacturing system theory, which I learned in my university research, is extremely beneficial in my current job. I think that the knowledge I learned in the university as well as the communication skills I learned from my professors and in conference presentations lay the foundation for my current knowledge and interpersonal skills.

Electronics and IT sector

The analyses and experiments I performed in my university research helped me acquire the research and development skills that I use today in a software development company. The university supports research and is an excellent environment to expand your potential and initiative in research.
