Materials Design and Processing Area (Koizumi Laboratory)

The foundation of manufacturing is designing materials with the desired functions and optimizing the manufacturing process. Because a major goal is to build a sustainable society, reducing environmental impact – which can be realized by energy conservation, CO2 emissions reduction, and resource recycling –are also important factors in manufacturing. Digitalization of manufacturing processes such as 3D printing holds promise as well as challenges for both material design and process development. One such challenge is some phenomena cannot be predicted or explained by known science. Our group develops foundational research techniques (e.g., computational techniques, data analysis methods) useful for new material design and manufacturing processes in which computational methods (e.g., computer simulations) are integrated with experimental methods (e.g., process monitoring). We hope to transform our lifestyle by creating innovative materials that promote a more resource-recycling sustainable society, while simultaneously expanding the frontiers of the underlying science and establishing metallurgy of a new era for the future generation.
